Girls soccer: Marcus defense dominant in shutout of Hebron

Published: Friday, March 1, 2013 6:18 PM CST
Marcus' girls soccer team is in sole possession of first in District 5-5A at the season's halfway point following a 2-0 win Tuesday against Hebron.

The Lady Marauders (4-1) lead Coppell (3-1-1) for the top spot entering Friday's match at Denton Ryan (results not available as of press time).

"We feel really good about where we're at," said Chad Hobbs, Marcus head coach. "We're 4-1 and in first and that was our goal."

On Tuesday, Courtney Forte and Katelyn Mountjoy found the back of the net for Marcus - ranked No. 11 nationally by the Elite Soccer Report - to supply the winning margin.

Mountjoy got the Lady Marauders on the board 30 seconds into the second half when she got behind the defense on the left side and delivered a low shot to the back of the post.

"It was a nice goal," Hobbs said. "We played well and it really could have even been 5-0. We hit the crossbar, missed a one-on-one chance and had another shot that was deflected by the goalie and hit under the crossbar, but bounced straight down."

For the season, Forte and Mountjoy are tied for the team lead with 13 goals, and have also contributed 10 and six assists, respectively.

"Changing Courtney to outside midfield has done really well for us," Hobbs said. "She's been an incredible threat and to have that many goals from her position is impressive."

Defensively, Marcus limited Hebron to one shot on goal.

"We were very organized and didn't let them get behind the defense," Hobbs said. "Hebron is very fast up front and plays with three forwards but they really only got behind us twice and one was offside."

The Lady Marauders kept the top spot thanks in part to rival Lewisville, which played No. 10 Coppell to a scoreless draw Tuesday. On Friday, the Lady Farmers (1-3-1) hosted Flower Mound (results not available as of press time).

The Lady Jaguars (3-2), meanwhile, entered Friday's match coming off a 5-0 win over Ryan.

Goals were scored by Vic Ambriz, Gabi D'Alesandro, Emma Heckendorn, Alexia Hix and Ariel Leach.

Flower Mound recorded a shutout on the boys side as well, blanking the Raiders, 2-0.

Nick Base notched a goal for the third consecutive match, while Brian Castillo also scored.

Marcus knocked off Hebron, 2-0, while Lewisville came up short against Coppell, 1-0.

Blake Barnes and Haiden Stiles netted goals for the Marauders.

On Friday, Flower Mound hosted Lewisville with Marcus hosting Ryan (results not available as of press time).
