This year's May election cycle will be a busy one in Plano.
Filing for a place on the ballot in the city council and school board elections ended Friday. Two of the four expiring seats on the council will be contested, as will six of the seven expiring seats on the school board.
Facing off for mayor will be Harry LaRosiliere, former city councilman, and Collin County GOP Chairman Fred Moses. Current Mayor Phil Dyer said in November he will not seek re-election.
LaRosiliere served on the council from 2005 to 2010 and currently serves on the CASA of Collin County Advisory Board and the president's council for Texas Health Resources Plano. Moses has served as GOP chairman since 2008 and is the founder and CEO of Telecom Electric Supply Co.
Place 8 on the council, currently held by the term-limited Lee Dunlap, drew three filings. Financial planner and former planning and zoning commissioner, David Downs; accountant and two-time council candidate, Cathy Fang; and former councilwoman, Sally Magnuson, who served three terms from 2002 to 2009, will all seek the seat.
In the Plano ISD Board of Trustees election, two candidates have filed for Place 1. Incumbent and school board president Tammy Richards will face Tammy Hooker, an HR professional and Plano ISD parent.
Meanwhile, four candidates filed for Place 2 on the board: Mark Hanna, Allison Johnston, Paul Kaminsky and incumbent Carrolyn Moebius.
Hanna works as a network architect, and Johnston is a provider relations representative. Kaminsky is a substitute teacher with Plano ISD and retired Army officer who made unsuccessful bids for school board seats in 2010 and 2011. Moebius is a past Hunt Elementary School PTA president and co-owns a veterinary hospital with her husband, Jim.
Two candidates filed for Place 3 on the board: John Caldwell served on the district's Career and Technical Education Advisory Committee and is a retired J.C. Penney executive. Nancy Humphrey has served on the board since 2010 and is a past Murphy Middle School PTA president and public accountant.
Place 6 on the board drew three candidates, including Patty Harris, incumbent Marilyn Hinton and Yoram Solomon.
Harris teaches high school math in Dallas ISD and unsuccessfully ran for Corpus Christi ISD school board last year. Hinton was first elected to the board in 2009 and is a former Plano ISD Head Start teacher. Solomon is executive vice president of Plano-based Interphase Corp. and former professor at the University of Texas at Dallas.
Finally, Place 7 on the board will be split between incumbent Missy Bender, who was first elected in 2006, and Steven Kravit, a business executive and member of the Strengthen Plano group that supported equal distribution of enrollment growth across the district's three senior highs during the 2011 boundary rezoning debate.
Two candidates on the May 11 ballot will be unopposed. Ben Harris (Place 2) and Lissa Smith (Place 4) will retain their seats on the city council.
