Girls basketball: Lady Dragons roll in playoff opener, boys team and soccer teams win
By Justin Thomas, jthomas@starlocalnews.com
Southlake Carroll's girls basketball team erupted in the second half Tuesday, racking up 44 points as the Lady Dragons dominated Weatherford in a bi-district round playoff contest, 78-38.
Carroll held a healthy lead at the break, 34-22, before a 24-7 run in the third quarter ended any question of a Weatherford rally in the final two quarters.
Kami Mickens led Carroll's three-headed attack with 19 points, while Kennedy Leonard scored 17 and Gretchen Morrison contributed 14. Lou Hawkins and Faith Woodring led Weatherford with nine points apiece. Savannah Nauwelaers and Sarah Williams each scored eight.
Franklin won in the bi-district round over Midland Lee, 79-65.
Last Tuesday, Carroll wrapped up the regular season with 75-32 victory over Haltom.
The squad grabbed control from the jump with a 25-4 run in the first quarter.
Mickens, Leonard and Morrison combined for 47 points.
Boys basketball: Dragons snap skid
With a win Tuesday against Keller Timber Creek (results not available as of press time), Southlake Carroll's boys basketball team will return to the postseason following a one-year absence.
The Dragons (7-6) entered Tuesday's finale one game ahead of Keller Fossil Ridge (6-7) for final playoff position and one game back of Justin Northwest for third.
The Dragons and Panthers split the season series, meaning Fossil Ridge would need to defeat the Texans and have Carroll lose to force a play-in game.
Carroll put itself in prime position last week by earning a pair of victories.
The Dragons knocked off Haltom Feb. 5, 73-64, and followed Friday with a convincing win over Keller Central, 66-48.
Cole Partyka posted 18 points in the win over the Chargers, while Brett Jolly chipped in 12 and Daniel Brown contributed 11. Jordan Enloe and J.R. Rogers paced Central with 17 points apiece.
Against Haltom, Sammy Silver led the way with 15 points with Spencer Tietjen following with 14.
The wins snap what was a four-game losing skid for the Dragons.
If a play-in game is necessary, it would likely take place Thursday or Friday, with the UIL Class 5A playoffs getting under way next Monday and Tuesday.
Boys soccer: Carroll still unbeaten in district
Revenge was on the mind Feb. 5 for Carroll's boys soccer team as the Dragons got a crack at a Richland team that eliminated them in the area round of the playoffs last season, 1-0.
This time it was the Dragons who had the final say as Carroll turned the tables for a 1-0 margin of its own.
Like in the postseason, the teams were locked into a defensive battle late in the second half before the Dragons finally got on the board when Michael Friedman launched a bicycle kick that deflected off Shane Carpenter and into the back of the net.
With a one-goal lead in hand, the Dragons maintained their defensive intensity and goalie Turner Robets came away with his first shutout of district play.
The squad continued Friday with a 3-1 margin over Justin Northwest.
Carroll continues Tuesday against Keller in a showdown for early control of first place (results not available as of press time) before going on the road at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Fossil Ridge.
Girls soccer: Lady Dragons cruising
While Carroll's boys team earned their first shutout of district, the Lady Dragons have now run their shutout streak to seven matches following a pair of victories in district.
Carroll hasn't allowed a goal since a 4-1 win Jan. 21 against Sachse.
On Friday, the club blitzed Justin Northwest, 5-0, behind a four-goal performance from Sophie Groff. Maddie Potter chipped in the Lady Dragons' other goal.
Last Tuesday, Frankie Garrett joined Groff (two goals) and Potter in the goal column as Carroll won convincingly against Richland, 4-0.
The Lady Dragons looked to stay perfect in district Tuesday against Keller (results not available as of press time) before hosting the Lady Panthers at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
