McKinney continued its perfect start to the season Friday with its most dominant win to date, a 42-7 victory against Irving Nimitz that kept up the torrid pace set in wins against Mansfield Legacy, 55-46, and Frisco Heritage, 45-21.

The Lions amassed more than 500 yards of offense for the second time this season courtesy of the pitch-and-catch combo of senior quarterback Robert Somborn and receivers TV Williams, Connor Fuentes and Jonathan Shannon.

Somborn threw for 294 yards and five touchdowns on 20-of-34 passing (59 percent). The bulk of that yardage went to Williams, who caught nine passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns to move his season total to seven touchdown receptions. His opening four receptions of the season all resulted in touchdowns.

Fuentes caught five passes for 95 yards and a touchdown, while Shannon served as an all-purpose weapon with three catches for 50 yards and a touchdown and an additional touchdown and 116 rushing yards on 11 carries.

The Lions are now averaging 47 points and 518 yards per game. Somborn has already thrown for 712 yards and 12 touchdowns to just two interceptions on 41-of-67 passing (61 percent) and is on pace for more than 2,300 yards.

McKinney's defense took a measurable step forward against Nimitz, as it allowed its fewest yards and points of the season. The Lions held Nimitz to 195 total yards and shut them out through the final three quarters.

The Lions will be back in action next week when they visit North Garland at William's Stadium. The Raiders are 1-2 after losing to Nimitz, 44-14, and Richardson Berkner, 48-19, and beating Hillcrest, 28-6. Considering that point differential against Nimitz, the Lions will enter the contest as considerable favorites.

In their first season back as a Class 5A team, McKinney has a good chance at opening the season with four consecutive victories. After a winless 2011 season, a fast start was just what the Lions needed, and with the prospect of a tough district down the road, stockpiling wins now should have their confidence peaking as they hit meaningful games.

After facing North Garland, McKinney will close pre-district against Denton Ryan before opening its first season in 10-5A against Plano Senior, which had a bye this week and sits at 2-0 with wins against Lewisville, 14-7, and Irving MacArthur, 27-20.
