McKinney North continued its slow start to the season Friday with a 31-10 loss against Prosper at Ron Poe Stadium. The Bulldogs struggled to get their offense going or keep Eagles quarterback Chase Dawkins and wideout Torii Hunter Jr. in check in their second consecutive setback.
Dawkins threw for 185 yards and three touchdowns on 11-of-18 passing (61 percent) and rushed for 79 yards on 17 carries. Hunter had seven receptions for 173 yards and caught all three touchdown passes, which went for 31, 35 and 68 yards.
Hunter scored a touchdown in both the first and second quarter to pace Prosper's 17-3 halftime lead before scoring again in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. North's lone touchdown came in the third on a 1-yard rush from junior quarterback Ben Dutze that capped an 11-play, 55-yard drive.
Dutze threw for 68 yards and two interceptions on 8-of-22 passing (36 percent) against Prosper and rushed for 43 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Bulldogs running back Trey Smith rushed for 62 yards on 19 carries as the team's leading rusher, while Evan Jones had three catches for 21 yards as their leading receiver.
North was held under 200 yards of offense by Prosper, which posted 326 yards.
The Bulldogs opened the 2012 season last week with a 21-17 loss to Carrollton Newman Smith in which they allowed the Trojans to rally from a 17-0 halftime deficit. Prosper opened with a 39-21 win against Keller.
North will be back in action Sept. 14 when it hosts Frisco Centennial at Ron Poe Stadium. The Titans have blown out their first two opponents courtesy of a 45-9 win against Denison and a 42-14 win against Lake Dallas. They knocked North out of the playoffs last year in the first round in a 45-16 win.
Centennial will serve as North's final opponent before they open their first season in District 13-4A, which also includes Sherman, Royse City, Lovejoy, Wylie, Greenville, Wylie East and Denison. Sherman and Lovejoy are the district's lone undefeated teams.
