Friends of the Lewisville Public Library to host book sale

Published: Friday, September 7, 2012 3:38 PM CDT
Bargain hunters will be in book paradise with the upcoming annual Friends of the Lewisville Public Library book sale.

The sale will include approximately 10,000 books, DVDs, CDs, children's VHS tapes and audio books, almost all priced at $2 or less. The majority of books available will be hard back, but there will be some paper back books. Book lovers will be able to shop through a variety of genres including fiction, children's books, science fiction and Texas history.

Merchandise is donated from individuals and the Lewisville Public Library. People may still donate books to the friends. There are donation bins inside library and next to the book drop off.

"It's basically like a book store," said Jackie Knittle, president of the Friends of the Lewisville Public Library. "There will also be some rare books available. We have a book consigner come in to find the most valuable books to sell online. We've had books sell for $150, and we get a large portion of the sales."

Knittle said most books will sell for 25 cents to $2, but there are some sets of coffee table books for $5. The book sale is cash only. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept 16. There is no fee to enter the sale.

"We usually raise between $3,000 to $5,000 at these sales," Knittle said. "We hold two sales each year to help fund the library."

There will also be a presale open to all city of Lewisville employees from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. A valid city badge must be shown at the Friday sale. The sale will be held in the community room at the library, 1197 W. Main St. From 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, shoppers should enter the sale from the Main Street, or courtroom door after that, shoppers may enter from the rear of the building when the library opens.

Also on Friday, the friends will unveil a metal sculpture the friends, along with the support of Point Bank, is donating to the library. The unveiling will be at 1 p.m. in the rotunda of the children's area.

At 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, the friends will have a "bag sale." For $5, shoppers will be given a plastic bag to fill with books. Knittle said the book sales are usually well attended.

"Our sole purpose is to raise funds for the benefit of the library. We don't give money to anyone else," Knittle said. "These sales help us raise money much faster."

The bi-annual book sales have helped the friends purchase two pieces of artwork for the library - the alphabet chair located in the children's area and the piece to be unveiled at the sale. They have also helped support the summer reading program, bring in entertainment authors to the library.

The Friends of the Lewisville Library meets monthly on the second Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the library. Membership is $15 annually or $200 for individual lifetime.

For memberships or donations make checks payable to the Friends of the Lewisville Public Library, c/o P.O. Box 299002, Lewisville, TX 75029-9002, or give to a library staff member.
