Randy Travis receives assault citation in Plano
By Conner Hammett, chammett@starlocalnews.com
Country star Randy Travis was cited by Plano police Thursday night after an alleged physical confrontation with another man in the parking lot of Prestonwood Baptist Church.
The incident occurred sometime between 10 and 10:30 p.m., said Officer David Tilley of the Plano Police Department. A husband and wife were involved in a verbal altercation when witnesses say Travis intervened and committed "a very minor" assault against the husband, Tilley said.
"The wife is actually a female acquaintance of Mr. Travis," Tilley said. "He intervened and reportedly assaulted the husband."
Travis' attorney, Larry Friedman, said the woman involved in the incident was Travis' girlfriend, Mary Beougher, who was waiting with her estranged husband for their teenage daughter to return from a field trip in the church parking lot at the time of the incident.
When an argument over custody broke out between the wife, husband and a third male subject, Travis -- who had accompanied Beougher to the church -- weighed in, Friedman said.
"It was Randy to the rescue," the attorney said.
A police report released Friday lists Travis and a 17-year-old female as having been cited for simple assault. Beougher's ex-husband and another male subject are listed as victims. Travis' clothes are described in the report as "torn" and his eyes "bloodshot."
Tilley said there is no evidence that alcohol was a contributing factor to the incident.
