Back-to-school preparations begin now: Frisco ISD prepares for upcoming school year

Published: Monday, July 30, 2012 10:54 PM CDT
With summer nearly over, Frisco ISD has begun preparations for the upcoming 2012-2013 school year. The school district will soon begin providing enrollment invitations and schedules for students in the district and has already started preparing facilities for the new school year.

Jamie Driskill, director of communications for Frisco ISD, said parents will soon receive e-mails for their children on how to register for classes.

"We'll be sending out our online enrollment invitations via e-mail to parents by the end of the first week in August so parents and students can go online to register for the upcoming school year," Driskill said.

Parents and guardians will receive separate e-mails for each individual student; each e-mail will contain instructions and a unique code necessary for that specific student to register for classes. Schedule pickups will begin shortly after that time.

Schedule pickups vary by school, although most will take place the week of Aug. 13. Orientation camps will also take place around that time for students entering middle school and high school for the first time -- these students can contact their respective schools for more information on orientation dates.

Elementary and kindergarten students will have the opportunity to take part in meet-the-teacher nights and bring-your-supply nights in the middle of August as well. Parents of new students at the secondary level should call to set schedules and pre-enroll.

In addition to helping students prepare, the school district will soon begin preparing teachers for the upcoming school year. First-time teachers will report on Aug. 13, teachers new to Frisco ISD will report Aug. 15 and all other teachers will report on Aug. 21.

Driskill said teachers new to the district will also take part in a special event welcoming them.

"The new teacher breakfast, hosted by the chamber of commerce in conjunction with the school district [on Aug. 12], is a neat event where the business community comes together to welcome new teachers to Frisco ISD," he said. "The event will feature some supply giveaways for teachers along with funds to help set up classrooms; it's a great 'welcome to Frisco' event."

While students and teachers prepare for the school year, four new schools are also being prepared for their grand openings. The four Frisco ISD schools opening for the first time this year -- Vandeventer Middle School and Comstock, Nichols and Phillips elementary schools -- are being readied for their first students.

"They're moving into those schools right now," said Shana Wortham, executive director of communications for Frisco ISD. "Some furniture and equipment is still being moved in, but the buildings are occupied and ready for the school year."

Supply lists for each school can be found on its specific website. Locations for each school's website can be found at the Frisco ISD website.

Some important events for back-to-school preparations at Frisco ISD are as follows:

Frisco ISD schedule pickups

Schedule pickups vary around the district for secondary schools. Parents should contact their campus for specific dates and time for each grade level's specific pickup information. New students at the secondary level should call their respective schools and make appointments to set schedules and pre-enroll.

Most middle schools in Frisco ISD will provide schedule pickups from Aug. 14 to 18. Some Frisco ISD schools offer schedule pickups August 20 to 24; contact your middle school for additional information.

High Schools will offer schedule pickups from Aug. 14 to 17.

Other important Frisco ISD dates

Elementary schools in Frisco ISD will host their "Meet the Teacher" nights on either Aug. 23 or 24. Parents should contact their school to find out which night their campus will provide the event.

Most Frisco ISD schools will begin providing open enrollment on Aug. 8 and continue to have ongoing registration throughout the year.

Community involvement

A back-to-school supply drive benefitting Frisco ISD students will take place at all four Frisco Walgreens locations from July 29 through Aug. 18. The drive is part of a national partnership between Walgreens and the Kids in Need Foundation.

The Frisco Cares Clinic, located at 6811 Oak St., is providing a back-to-school immunization and physical clinic on Aug. 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Frisco residents and residents from surrounding cities are welcome. Parents must bring each student's immunization records to the clinic, which will provide vaccinations and sports physicals for $15.
