Cats looking for homes, 86 felines surrendered to shelter
By Kenny Green, kgreen@starlocalnews.com
The city of Mesquite has cats, lot s of cats. This is in part due to the recent surrender of 86 cats to the shelter.
“The cats were surrendered to us. We have been trying to find a place for them. We began by going with the animal rescue angle first because they can take more at once,” said Don White, animal services superintendent. “We are trying to make sure the rescues all have a chance at them first.”
The shelter is normally equipped to handle 36 total cats, so additional collapsible-style kennels had to be used to accommodate the additional cats as a result of the surrendered animals.
He added that the additional cats forced the shelter to tap into its reserve fund to replenish supplies, such as food, that were needed to help care for the animals.
White said that due to an outpouring of support from across the region, 70 percent of the cats have been placed in rescue groups or other area shelters in approximately a week. The shelter still has 23 of the cats available for adoption to the general public.
White said the cats that were received vary in terms of health. Some were healthy with no issues and several have some illnesses that have had to be treated. Most of the sick cats are in the care of the rescue groups.
“They took most of the sick cats except for a few that have chronic illnesses,” White said.
Cat adoptions start at $60 and include spay/neuter, vaccination, and microchipping. The cats are available on a first come, first serve basis. He said that the shelter had received 19 emails expressing interest prior to the cats being made available.
To expedite the process, White recommends that you identify cats you are interested in adopting before coming to the shelter. You can visit the shelter’s website at www.cityofmesquite.com/animal and browse the shelter database to see pictures of the cats. The rescued cats are marked “RESCUE." Once you see a cat you are interested in, write down the eight digit Animal ID number for the cat or cats that you're interested in. This will help the shelter staff find the cat you're looking for and move it to a get-to-know area for you to meet it. A printed list of cats is also available at the shelter.
If you have any questions about the cats or the adoption process or would like to make a donation to the shelter, contact the shelter at 972-216-6283.
