Frisco resident's band to perform at Vans Warped Tour

Published: Monday, July 2, 2012 4:06 PM CDT
As a young teenager, being a musician was something Taylor Thrash never thought could be a reality -- only a dream that so few have the opportunity to experience. Thrash has since grown into one of the world's most popular unsigned artists.

Thrash competed in the 16th annual Ernie Ball Unsigned Battle of the Bands this year and placed in the top four out of 26,000 artists. The Frisco resident won the chance to perform seven shows during the Vans Warped Tour, including the July 3 show at the Gexa Energy Pavilion.

Thrash hopes his fans will enjoy the show, and is excited about playing on a large-scale concert series.

"I hope it's going to be a big turn out," Thrash said. "I'll be playing most of my older songs and mix in a few of my newer ones.

"At 14 when you're writing songs for your girlfriend in your parents' house, you would've never thought something like [playing at Warped Tour] would come true."

Thrash got involved with music as young child -- he began writing songs and started a band consisting of his closest friends in high school. He later dropped out of college to pursue his music career in Los Angeles.

During the summer of 2010 Thrash began working on songs which were later released in a self-titled EP. The single "What's Her Face" became so popular that Hollister, a clothing store, played the song for a month in all of its stores internationally, helping Thrash gain fans and massive popularity.

"It's really cool knowing that your work was played in such a popular store for that length of time," Thrash said. "It's pretty weird actually."

Other singles, such as "La La Love" and "Run Into Me," grew in popularity as well. "La La Love" was downloaded more than 12,000 times in one day, while "What's Her Face" was downloaded more than 2,000 times on iTunes in Europe and United Kingdom.

The power-pop artist has been recognized as one of the top 20 unsigned artists on Purevolume, a music streaming website, for two years in a row.

Thrashes new album, "Step Forward," is set to be released in late-July. Fans can expect more power-pop songs along with hip-hop inspired beats, Thrash said.

Thrash has been contacted by record labels in the past, but nothing stood out to his liking.

"I kind of like being unsigned though," Thrash said. "It gives me a lot of freedom because I don't have to be what someone is telling to be. Eventually, I would love to be signed and get big and things [of that nature]. But for now, I'm good."

As for now, Thrash is playing and making music with his best friends and couldn't be happier with the way things have turned out.

"I've known [my band] for years now, and it's great to be able to perform and make music with them," Thrash said. "I'm the luckiest dude in the world."
