Battle of the Badge set for June 9 at Lewisville Lake Park

Published: Friday, June 1, 2012 3:49 PM CDT
Area first responders will battle on the softball fields instead of emergencies during the 10th annual Battle of the Badge Softball Tournament.

The tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday on fields nine and 10 at the Lake Park Softball Complex located at the Lake Park Road and Mill Street intersection and will last until approximately 7 p.m. The tournament will benefit the Children's Advocacy Center of Denton County (CACDC). Hot dogs and other refreshments will be available for purchase. Entrance fee for spectators at the event is $5 per person. Children 12 and under are free. The event is organized by the Lewisville Police Academy Alumni Association (LPAAA).

"While this is not one of our biggest fundraisers, it's a special fundraiser because of the involvement with the community," said Dan Leal, executive director for CACDC. "We've been the benefactors of this event for each of the 10 years it has been held. I think we were originally selected as the benefactor because we work so closely with the departments. We're partner agencies. This tournament began as a small tournament between the Lewisville police and fire departments. Now it's grown to include many other cities."

This year's softball tournament will feature the Lewisville police and fire departments, the Denton police and fire departments, the Flower Mound Fire Department, the Irving Fire Department, a combined Lake Cities/Little Elm Fire team and the Carrollton police and fire. The Carrollton Police Alumni are playing in the tournament for the first time.

The tournament will open with several same-city rivalry matches including Lewisville police versus Lewisville fire at 8:30 a.m., Carrollton police against Carrollton Police Alumni at 9 a.m., and Denton police against Denton fire at 10 a.m.

In addition to the tournament, there will also be an array of family activities including a bounce house, clowns, crafts, face painting and a silent auction.

Last year, the Irving Fire Department won the tournament. Flower Mound Fire Department has won the tournament three times, and Lewisville Fire Department has won the tournament twice.

CACDC is a nonprofit agency that serves child victims of sexual or very serious physical abuse after a report has been made to Child Protective Services or law enforcement. The agency works closely with law enforcement, Child Protective Services, the District Attorney's Office, and sexual assault nurse examiners on the investigation and prosecution of severe child abuse cases. Services, such as counseling, are provided free of charge to the children and non-offending family members.

"We enjoy helping put the event together with the LPAAA. We supply volunteers, help organize the teams, provide score keepers and help with organization of tournament itself. We think very highly of the police and fire departments, so we're happy to be part of this event," Leal said. "We would really love to see packed stands at the event. It's a fun event, but it also offers quality softball."
