Presbyterian Church homecoming


Historic Flower Mound Presbyterian Church, Denton County's oldest Presbyterian Church, is celebrating its homecoming with a special worship service and potluck on June 3. All are welcome.

Homecoming celebrates the history of the church and Flower Mound and recognizes those who attended the original Donald School. The church was founded in 1854 by Reverend Matthew B. Donald. The school was founded in 1877 and named for the Donald family who were among the first families to settle in the Flower Mound area and helped to develop the community.

The church is located at 1501 Flower Mound Road. Sunday school starts at 9:30 a.m., followed by worship service at 10:30 a.m. Church members and former attendees of the Donald School are invited to share their memories and stories during the service. The potluck follows the worship service.

LPD places third in gun competition

Lewisville Police Department Lieutenant Mike Lane, Sergeant Ken Naffziger and Officer Rick Crociata recently traveled to Liberty Hill, Texas, to compete in a National Rifle Association-sponsored, three-gun competition. Once the final scores were tallied, Team Lewisville took home third place in the "Tactical Division" competition.

Members of the U.S. Military; contract security operators; and local, state, and federal law enforcement officers converged in the Texas Hill Country to test their training and skills. Participants traveled from as far away as California and Oregon for this competition. Seven complex stages of fire were constructed, requiring officers to use their patrol rifles, shotguns and duty handguns for successful navigation.

Library summer reading celebration set

Lewisville Library's Summer Reading Kickoff Celebration will be held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at the library, 1197 W. Main St.

The event, sponsored by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, will feature a performance by the Sugar Free Allstars Live in Concert in the Bennett Children's Wing, along with face painting, balloon art, gymnastics and more. Wii gaming also will be available for teens at Teen Point.

At the event, children, teens and adults can register for the Summer Reading Club, "Get a Clue...at the Library," and become eligible to win prizes.

LPD Explorers earn second place honors

Lewisville Police Department Explorers, accompanied by Officers Michael Hernandez and Emma Smith, travelled recently to Waxahachie to participate in the 28th Annual Texas Law Enforcement Explorer Advisors Association competition.

LPD Explorers took two second-place trophies and medals for Active Shooter and Driving While Intoxicated scenarios due to their attention to detail and the handling of these calls during the competition. Explorers competed against 127 other teams from across the state, as well as four teams from outside of Texas.

Explorers introduces youth to the career of law enforcement, allowing them to learn about the roles that police officers play in the community and it prepares them for careers in law enforcement through specialized training programs.

Free outdoor yoga class offered

Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater and its Old Town neighbor, Blue Anjou yoga studio, are teaming up to offer a series of free outdoor yoga classes on Wednesday evenings in the MCL Grand courtyard. Class will be held 7-8 p.m. each Wednesday now through June 27 and will be led by instructors from Blue Anjou. In the event of rain, the class will move inside the MCL Grand. No previous yoga experience is necessary to participate.

Camp registration now open

Registration is underway for the Xtreme Response Camp, to be held June 25-29. The camp, which provides a hands-on look at public safety and disaster preparedness, only has 30 slots available. Ages 12-16 are welcome at the camp, which will cover dive operations at Lewisville Lake, SWAT operations, vehicle extrication, live fire demonstration, K-9 search and rescue and more.

Book Lover's Social

The Flower Mound Public Library at 3030 Broadmoor Lane will host the Book Lover's Social at 7 p.m. June 4.

Join other book lover's to share and discuss some of your favorite books. This is a great way to meet new people and compile a summer reading list. Refreshments will be served.

Summer skills clinic scheduled

For the first time, the Harlem Globetrotters are partnering with fitness club industry leader, 24 Hour Fitness, to host 120 summer skills clinics for youth across the U.S. Designed to take fans ages six to 14 behind the curtain to see the magic behind the Globetrotters' electrifying basketball skills and tricks, participants will also learn about the importance of staying active and eating healthy. The clinics will take place at approximately 40 - 24 Hour Fitness clubs in nine states over a 10-week period this summer, including five locations in the Dallas metro area, June 18-22.

"We are excited to partner with 24 Hour Fitness on this innovative program that combines the world's most entertaining basketball team and a national fitness leader," said Harlem Globetrotters CEO Kurt Schneider. "These clinics are an extension of our brand and allow our fans to experience unparalleled interaction with our talented players, while promoting health and wellness for children in a fun setting."

Each clinic will be conducted by current Globetrotter players. Two, three-hour clinics will be held in Lewisville June 20 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 2 to 5 p.m.

As part of the partnership, the Harlem Globetrotters will offer participants a voucher for a complimentary ticket to a 2013 World Tour game. Additionally, 24 Hour Fitness will offer free 3-day passes and discounts on club memberships to parents of clinic participants.

Registration information about the summer skills clinics can be found at www.harlemglobetrotters.com, where visitors can find a complete list of clinic locations, dates, and times. Kids who sign up for a clinic by April 30 will receive a limited-time discount offer of $49.

To supplement the live clinics, the Globetrotters will also run "how to" drills and skills videos on key social media platforms to extend the experience for clinic participants.

KLB seeks nominations

Keep Lewisville Beautiful (KLB) recognizes one residential and one business each month from April through October for the "Yard of the Month." KLB is looking for nominations. All nominations must be in by the 20th of each month. Photos of each property will be displayed on KLB's website by the 25th of each month for voting.

Teen author Chima to visit library

Lewisville Public Library will host teen author Cinda Williams Chima Thursday, June 7, as part of the library's Teen Summer Reading Program.

Teens will recognize her name because Chima has been included on the Texas Lone Star Reading List for middle school students twice in the past few years. Her current series, the Seven Realms, was featured in a full-page ad in Entertainment Weekly's recent special issue devoted to The Hunger Games movie.

Chima will be at the library at 6:30 p.m. for an author talk, question-and-answer session, and book-signing.

LLELA hosts June activities

Take a night hike at 8 p.m. Sunday, June 3. Join LLELA trail guides as they lead a twilight/moonlight stroll down the Redbud Trail. No flashlights are necessary. Ages five and up. Registration is required at 972-219-3930 or lisacole@unt.edu. The fee is $2 per hiker, in addition to LLELA's regular admission fee of $5 per person.

Spend the morning with the birds at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, June 9. Bird watchers of all skill levels are welcome to join Keith Lockhart as he guides visitors to LLELA's best birding locations. Ages 10 and up. There is a $2 program fee for the bird walk, in addition to the regular gate fee. Reservations are requested, but not required; call 972-219-3930.

Nature Walk at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 9. Explore the Cicada Trail with a Texas Master Naturalist in a guided search for wildflowers, summer nesting birds, animal tracks and signs, and more. There is a $2 program fee, in addition to the regular gate fee. All ages are welcome. Reservations are requested, but not required, at 972-219-3930.

Open House at the Minor-Porter Log House from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 16. Completely restored and furnished with all the trappings of everyday frontier life, the log house gives visitors to LLELA a window on everyday life in Denton County in 1870. Interested visitors of all ages can arrive at any time during the open hours and tour at their own pace. Knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to guide visitors through the structures and answer questions in this informal tour. There is no additional fee for this activity beyond regular admission to LLELA.

NCTC hosts lecture series

Lifelong Learning, the non-credit division of North Central Texas College, kicks off its Summer Lecture Series in June. Local author Tom Tweeddale gives the first lecture about presidential history in "An Evening with the Presidents" from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 4. The following week, Lewisville-based author and history instructor Robin Cole-Jett retraces the lives and times of the gangster-era southwest in "Traveling History with Bonnie and Clyde" from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 11.
