Frisco swimming coach Bruce Eubanks said his team’s goal heading into the Class 4A State Swimming and Diving Meet was to come home with two banners.
Consider it mission accomplished for Frisco, as the Raccoons came away with a fourth-place finish at state, and the Lady Raccoons earned a third-place finish.
“I told them before the meet that we have 12 banners right now and that adding two more would be really great,” Eubanks said.
Senior Corey Nix earned his team 20 points in the boys 100-yard freestyle by beating out Gilmer’s Grant Koudelka and Kingwood Park’s Brooks Powell for first place in the event.
Nix ended with a finals time of 45.13 seconds, with Koudelka just behind at 45.45.
“That 100 freestyle really helped get the relay team excited,” Eubanks said.
One event later, Nix helped Ben Maxwell, Radu Prunoiu and Trent Sandwisch take top honors in the 200 freestyle after finishing with a time of 1:25.75.
The first-place effort earned Frisco 40 points in the standings after edging out second-place Stratford.
“Winning that race was huge for us,” Eubanks said.
Coming in at fourth place with a time of 1:27.70 was Wakeland’s team of Coleman Phelps, Chase Garrott, Zachary Kline and Liam Garrott.
Nix also earned a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.49 seconds, finishing just behind Powell in the race.
Lone Star’s Cody Holland came in sixth place in the event while Centennial’s Zachary Fugina finished in seventh.
The meet was kicked off with the boys and girls 200-yard medley relay events and Frisco took fourth place in the boys event.
Nix, Prunoiu, Maxwell and Sandwisch came in at 1:35.90, with the first-place team from Stratford finishing with a time of 1:35.01.
Wakeland’s team of Chase Garrott, Kline, Brayden Seal and Liam Garrott ended with an eighth-place finish after coming in at 1:39.86.
The Wolverines ended the day as the sixth-best team, earning 108 points.
For Frisco’s girls team, it was Whitney Allen who stood out most.
Allen took first in the girls 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:03.54, earning 20 points for Frisco.
“We had some ups and downs,” Eubanks said. “There were some really good swims and we also had some disappointing ones.”
Heritage’s Alexandra Marsolek came in at 11th place in the event to give the Lady Coyotes six points.
Later in the meet, Allen took home a bronze medal in the 100 breaststroke, coming in at 1:06.40 for the race.
The third-place finish earned Allen 16 points, while Marsolek finished in eighth for 11 points.
With Allen joining Lady Raccoons Allie Walsh, Lauren Jones and April McDonough for the 200 freestyle relay, Frisco finished with a third-place time of 1:38.25 for 32 more points.
Liberty’s team of Karina Sell, Ashley Nguyen, Sohini Mukherjee and MacKenzie Bowman finished in 1:42.64 for 10th place.
After dominating the District 9-4A and also the regional meet in Frisco earlier this year, sisters Lauren and Ashleigh Dehls competed in the girls one meter diving event and earned eighth and 13th place, respectively.
Lauren earned a score of 337.10 and Ashleigh put up a 283.80 to combine for 15 points in the event.
“The bottom line is that it took a total team effort,” Eubanks said.
In the same diving event on the boys side, it was Liberty’s Mathew Phillip earning a fourth-place finish with a score of 411.50 to give the Redhawks 15 points.
Frisco’s Mitchell Larios put up a score of 359.40 for 13 more points for the Raccoons.
Prunoiu racked up another 17 points for Frisco in the boys 100-yard breaststroke by finishing with a time of 57.42 seconds for second place.
Prunoiu’s time of 57.42 seconds was just behind first-place Stratford’s Ford Story at 56.63.
In the final two events of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay teams competed to cap off the event.
On the girls side, Frisco’s team of Allen, Walsh, Jones and Bailey Finkelstein finished the Lady Raccoons’ time at state with a second-place finish after coming in at 3:33.14.
Wakeland’s team of Caroline Williams, Chandler Wagner, Taylor Hanttula and Meghan O’Neill earned 12th place in the event.
The Lady Wolverines finished the day with 29 points to come in at 22nd in the meet.
Meanwhile, the Lady Raccoons boasted a third-place honor after scoring 164 points to finish behind Highland Park (269) and Magnolia West (200).
“Going into the meet and estimating the points, we knew the girls had a shot at the top three unless there were major events that happened that kept them out,” Eubanks said.
With all top-five teams earning a banner in the event, the two Frisco teams came home with a banner each, accomplishing their pre-meet goal.
“Things worked out right and we had some good swims,” Eubanks said.
