District dominance: Wakeland takes first in boys and girls events for 9-4A

With the district’s best tennis players meeting for the 9-4A tournament recently, it was Wakeland that stood out above the rest.
The Wolverines and Lady Wolverines each earned first-place honors to be named the spring district champions.
“We were very excited,” said Steve Schkade, Wakeland head coach. “The kids played some of the best tennis they’ve played all year.”
Senior Kyle Funk and sophomore Natalie Miller each represented Wakeland in the singles finals before Funk fell to Heritage’s Nihar Damarasingue (6-3, 6-4) and Miller dropped a match to Liberty’s Lyndsey Bennett (6-2, 6-1).
“We have a tough district,” Schkade said. “It’s very deep and a lot of the schools have a lot of talent.”
In the boys singles event, Frisco’s Alex Wallen defeated Centennial’s BJ Farmakis (6-0, 6-3) for third place.
After falling to Damarasingue, Funk drew a playback match against Wallen and came out with a (6-3, 6-2) victory to advance to the regional tourney.
Miller had to defeat Frisco’s Brittany Tomlin (6-1, 6-1) in her playback match after Tomlin took down Centennial’s Julianna Hess for third place.
“We had a really good tournament,” Schkade said.
In doubles action it was Wakeland at the top for the girls event and in mixed doubles play.
The team of Sarah Cocke and Shelby Strohla took down Frisco for a (4-6, 7-6, 6-2) finals victory.
Meanwhile, the mixed doubles team of Emily Allen and Austin Huffman took on fellow Wakeland players Liz Salmon and David Floyd. Allen and Huffman took the championship with a (7-6, 6-2) win.
In the boys doubles event, it was Centennial coming out on top, with Frisco and Heritage earning second and third place honors, respectively.
The successful showing in the district match allowed Wakeland to send six doubles players and two singles players to the regional match, which occurred Monday and Tuesday.
Despite several strong showings, Miller was the only Wakeland player to advance to the state tournament.
“[Miller] made it to the finals last year in mixed doubles,” Schkade said. “So she’s been on that big stage before. She’ll go down there and battle.”
Although Miller was the only Wakeland player to make it to Austin, Schkade said everybody he sent to the regional tournament won in the opening round.
“We had some really good performances,” he said.
Bennett will join Miller at state for the second straight year.
State tournament action will begin April 30 and conclude the following day.
“You have to show up and play,” Schkade said.
