Two of three: RoughRiders look to take series against San Antonio

Published: Thursday, April 26, 2012 2:26 PM CDT
Despite dropping a 6-5 contest to San Antonio on Wednesday, the RoughRiders still managed to take the opening two games of a four-game home set against the Missions.

Frisco, the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, began with a 2-1 victory on Monday that saw starting pitcher Carlos Pimentel toss five scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits and striking out four batters.

The win was Pimentel’s second of the season and keeps the starter’s ERA at 0.00 for the season.

Reliever Trevor Hurley earned a hold after entering the game during the sixth inning and tossing two shutout innings without giving up a hit.

Pitchers Joe Ortiz and Johan Yan followed Hurley in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, and both allowed Frisco to stay maintain its lead.

The game’s first run came in the home half of the third when Leury Garcia tripled on a line drive with one out.

Jose Felix then brought Garcia home in the next at bat with a sacrifice fly in foul territory.

The RoughRiders would add an insurance run during the following inning when Mike Olt and Brad Hawpe each drew one-out walks to put two men on.

After Ryan Strausborger was called out on strikes for the inning’s second out, Chris McGuiness delivered an RBI single to left field that scored Olt to give Frisco a 2-0 lead.

Neither team would score until San Antonio’s Nathan Freiman homered in the top of the ninth to score his team’s only run of the game.

Frisco would build on Monday’s momentum with a 7-2 victory on Tuesday that saw the RoughRiders drive in three runs during the first inning.

The scoring was started when Olt belted a two-run homer after shortstop Jurickson Profar tripled on a line drive to right field.

Alex Buchholz added Frisco’s second triple of the inning shortly after Olt’s homer and reached home after a throwing error from San Antonio second baseman Jedd Gyorko.

Errors would hurt the Missions in the third inning as well, as Profar took advantage of a leadoff error to reach third base and later score on a Jared Prince single.

Garcia would then bring home Olt to make it 5-1 in favor of Frisco after three innings of play.

With neither team scoring in the fourth, fifth, sixth or seventh innings, Frisco starting pitcher Barret Loux, a Houston native, earned the victory and improved to 4-0 on the season.

Loux tossed six innings, surrendering just one run on six hits and striking out five batters, giving the righty a 1.25 ERA on the year.

Wednesday’s 6-5 loss came despite a three-run first inning from Frisco after San Antonio quickly came back and forced extra innings before winning it in the 11th.

With the two teams tied at five runs apiece after ten innings, San Antonio played small ball to score the game’s winning run.

A single from Dean Anna led off the inning before the Missions put Anna in scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Reymond Fuentes.

Jeudy Valdez would come through during San Antonio’s next at bat for an RBI single that proved to be the difference maker.

The loss dropped Frisco to 11-8 on the season. The team remained in first place in the Texas League South standings though and looked to get back on the winning track on Thursday with a 7 p.m. series finale against the Missions before starting a four-game home set against Corpus Christi.

Results of Thursday’s game were not known as of press time.
