Council paves the way for Academy Sports and Outdoors
By Chris Roark, croark@starlocalnews.com
The Flower Mound Town Council approved three items Monday to get the town one step closer to welcoming Academy Sports and Outdoors.
The council unanimously approved a land use change, a rezoning request and a tree removal permit for the Highlands Plaza shopping center located at the southeast corner of Chinn Chapel Road and Justin Road. The new rezoning allows for a tenant with a facility size of 50,000 square feet to 75,000 square feet.
The plan calls for Academy’s facility to be 74,424 square feet. Other components of the 15-acre project include two smaller retail/restaurant buildings and three restaurant buildings. In all, the project is expected to contain 23,000 square feet of restaurants and 85,000 square feet of retail.
Development officials said the type of restaurants Flower Mound can expect in this project are sit-down dining establishments, with some of them being chain restaurants with limited locations.
