Hospital invites community to relieve pain
From staff reports
Medical Center of Lewisville is hosting an All Right Now: Solving Shoulder, Hip and Knee Pain event to educate women on the benefits of joint surgery. Problems affecting the major joints of the body like the shoulders, hips and knees can cause persistent pain, interfere with daily living and restful sleep, and develop into more serious problems, which can become difficult and complicated to treat. Women are invited to learn about how early, correct diagnosis and surgical treatment can be the answer to solving their painful problems.
"Surgery, for many women, can be a 'now' solution for their shoulder, hip and knee pain and can get them back on their feet fast -- allowing for a more active, healthy life," said Tanya Abreu, president and national program director of Spirit of Women Hospital Network. "There is still a belief that surgery is a last-resort option and reserved only for elderly people: this is simply not the case. Medical advances have helped surgery to be the answer for people of all ages who are needlessly suffering from a range of problems which surgery can repair quickly and easily. We are seeing less complications and faster recovery time than ever before -- with most procedures performed in a same-day outpatient surgery setting. Surgery can have you back on your feet and feeling all right now."
Surgery is primarily recommended to ease pain and increase range of motion. Problems affecting the shoulders, hips and knees can be caused by injury, aging or disease. Hundreds of thousands of surgeries are performed annually to correct painful shoulders, hips and knees. Today, surgeons often use robotic technology which allows them to see more clearly, position and manipulate instruments more precisely and perform a wide range of complex procedures with fewer complications and better results. Robotic surgery may also permit people who might not be traditional candidates for open or minimally-invasive surgery to undergo surgical repair. If surgery was previously not an option, it may be now.
Dr. James Heerwagen, Orthopedic Surgeon, will discuss the symptoms, risk factors and surgical solutions for shoulder, hip and knee problems. The free program will also include a spring fashion show featuring MCL nurses presented by Coldwater Creek -- Highland Village. A light dinner will be served. The program will be held in the second floor community room at Medical Center of Lewisville on Monday, May 7 at 6:30pm.
