McGee seeking second term on HV Council
By Chris Roark, croark@acnpapers.com
Highland Village City Councilman John McGee has filed for re-election for Place 6.
Election Day is May 12.
McGee was elected in 2010 after spending time on the city’s zoning board of adjustment, board of ethics and city charter re-write commission.
During his two years on the council, McGee said the accomplishment he is most proud of is helping pass an ordinance to ban smoking inside restaurants. The ordinance took effect last summer.
“I think it was important because it’s been long-known and widely held that second-hand smoke is extremely dangerous,” McGee said. “There is no way to separate smokers and non-smokers in a safe way other than one group being inside and one group being outside.”
Looking ahead, McGee said there are several issues that will be important to follow closely as they relate to Highland Village and other cities. Among those is water.
“It’s critical for Highland Village and all the other cities,” McGee said. “We’ve been in a drought for a long time, and the population keeps growing. There is no new water infrastructure in the near future. [The area’s] next reservoir probably won’t happen for another 25 years. With our population growing and with Texas being as arid as it is, water consumption and conservation is going to be a big issue. We all have to have it, so how we use it is key.”
McGee said another issue facing Highland Village is the expansion of Interstate 35E and how it will impact the city. Copperas Branch Park will likely be a staging site for the highway expansion project, and city officials have said it is important that the city is compensated fairly for its use.
McGee is one of several people who have announced their intentions to run in this year’s election. With Mayor Scott McDearmont announcing he will not seek re-election, councilmen Bill Irwin and Patrick Davis have filed to run in his place.
In addition, Councilman Louis E. Robichaux has announced his intention to run for re-election for Place 4. And planning and zoning chairperson Michelle Schwolert has announced she plans to run for Place 2.
