LakeCities Ballet Theatre performs 'The Nutcracker'
By Heather M. Goodwin, hgoodwin@acnpapers.com
The LakeCities Ballet Theatre (LBT) will kick off the holiday season with its annual performance of 'The Nutcracker.'
The ballet will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Stuver Auditorium at Lewisville High School, 1098 W. Main Street. Reserved seating tickets range from $42 to $17 and are available online at www.lakecitiesballet.org or by phone at 972-966-8006 or at the door.
The Nutcracker music was composed in 1891 by Pyotr Illych Tchaikovsky. The first performance of the ballet, based on Alexandre Dumas' adaptation of "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King," by E.T.A. Hoffmann, was choreographed by Marius Petipa. It first appeared for Russian audiences in December of 1892 in St. Petersburg and was considered a failure.
The ballet is performed in two acts. It begins at a Victorian era party hosted by the wealthy Mayor Silberhaus and his family. As guests arrive, bearing gifts, children dance and play among the party festivities. The mayor's young daughter, Clara, is soon enchanted by her mysterious Godfather, Drosselmeyer, who gives her a nutcracker. Unknown to Clara at the time, the nutcracker will soon take her into a magical dream world where the nutcracker becomes the Nutcracker Prince.
The first act comes to a close with a battle between the Mouse King and his minion mice and the Nutcracker Prince and his toy soldiers. Clara, the Nutcracker Prince and his toy soldiers travel through a snow-laden landscape of dancing fairies on their way to the Land of Sweets in order to escape.
Act II begins with guardian Angels keeping watch over delicate tiny angels and cherubs, as they glide across the stage in anticipation of the arrival of Clara and the Nutcracker Prince. The Sugarplum Fairy, danced by Julie Kent, and her Cavalier, danced by Jose Manuel Carreno, amaze Clara with their unparalleled grace and power.
The Land of Sweets is filled with dance and delight as Clara is treated to performances by dancers from all around the globe. The Sugarplum Fairy helps Clara find her way home. The story closes as the Nutcracker Prince delivers Clara to the safety of her own bed.
The LBT's production of "The Nutcracker" was choreographed by Kelly Lannin, LBT artistic director. Music will be provided by the Lewisville Lake Symphony, led by Maestro Adron Ming. Special guest appearances include Kent, returning American Ballet Theater principal dancer as the Sugarplum Fairy, and recently retired ABT principal dancer, Carreno as Cavalier.
