Boot camp offers big prize
By Chris Roark, croark@acnpapers.com
A Denton County man has the chance to be a big winner and a big loser at the same time.
The Argyle Adventure Boot Camp, a 15-week class that features fitness instruction, nutritional counseling and motivational training, kicks off Monday. Twenty-two men from Denton County are invited to compete in the Boot Camp Contest in which contestants see who can become the most fit by the end of the contest.
The winner gets a $1,000 cash prize, as well as an envelope full of gift cards to a variety of stores. Perhaps more important is what can be lost.
The event begins with a seminar at 7 p.m. Monday where participants will learn how to make the most of the event. They will receive tips on eating away from home, having optimal hydration and preparing fat-burning meals. The seminar will conclude with a brief fitness assessment and photos.
The workouts begin Tuesday from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. at Liberty Christian School, located at 1301. S. Hwy. 377 in Argyle. Participants can choose to work out three, four or five times a week. The camp runs for four weeks with a one-week break before beginning another four-week session. The camp ends Dec. 17.
While there, campers will learn healthy eating habits and exercise routines while participating in challenging physical drills.
The Adventure Boot Camp is organized and led by Flower Mound resident Kelli Calabrese, a nationally renowned health and fitness instructor. Brad Jurica, a certified boot camp coach, runs the camp.
Calabrese is the 2007 Denton County Personal Trainer of the Year and 2004 Personal Trainer of the Year as voted by Personal Fitness Professional Magazine. She is an international presenter, author, personal trainer, lifestyle coach, spokesperson, women’s fitness expert and 21-year wellness professional. Calabrese is the editor of Personal Fitness Professional and Wellness & Fitness Entrepreneur magazines.
“When we moved to Dallas, I didn’t want to own a health club anymore, but I wanted to still be in the trenches as far as training,” Calabrese said. “I thought the boot camp would be the best way to combine everything that I’ve been involved with. I know the system works. It’s a good mix, and it’s not just one discipline. I can combine 24 years of experience so that it’s something different everyday.”
Calabrese points to last year’s contest winner as proof the boot camp works. The winner lost 45 pounds and 10 percent body fat, and also shrunk his waist size from 42 to 32 inches. He also got off his cholesterol and high blood pressure medication.
“A lot of drills bring them back to the days when they were doing wind sprints, obstacle courses and things that they were used to,” Calabrese said. “They really enjoy it. This takes them back to their youth.”
After each day’s workout, Jurica sends an email to the campers that summarizes the previous workout, highlights the upcoming workout, gives feedback on how the previous day went and empowers participants to make healthy choices. Those topics include information on nutrition, footwear, goal setting, muscle recovery, quality sleep and mental toughness.
Calabrese warns that part of being mentally tough is attending the classes, and she said participants should be prepared to be called out if they don’t show up.
Each Friday, Jurica and Calabrese collect a food log from the participants and return them Monday with feedback.
Also on Fridays, the participants can weigh in to check their progress. Measurements will be re-taken every four weeks as well.
While the contest is for men, the boot camp is also open to women. Spouses who join together can receive a discount.
