McKinney Ice Hockey Hosts New Zealand National team

Story by Chris Raimondi, Hockey writer
The McKinney Ice Hockey Varsity Team scrimmaged the New Zealand National Under-18 Team Thursday night at the McKinney StarCenter, and although McKinney won 6-2, it was a victorious evening for both teams and everyone in attendance. as the love of a game brought boys from opposite sides of the globe together.
The New Zealand National team is their way to Monterey, Mexico, for the International Ice Hockey Federation Division III Ice Hockey Tournament which began Sunday, March 14.
The team arrived in McKinney on Sunday, March 8 for a week of practices at the McKinney StarCenter to get accustomed to the time change before competing in Mexico.
They finished their week with a scrimmage against the hometown, McKinney Varsity Team which represents all three McKinney High Schools, and has advanced to their league finals as the number one seed. McKinney plays a three-game series this weekend in Plano for the Championship.
Before the game, New Zealand presented McKinney with a gift of appreciation and then performed a traditional Haka Dance on the ice.
The cultural dance, which they perform before all International Games, was a highlight of the evening for everyone in attendance.
Once the puck dropped, both teams played a great hockey game. McKinney's six goals were scored by Danny Goss, Michael Tallo, Dillon Kaiser, Dane Syme and Milton Trevino, with assists by Dustin Pointer, Logan Bingaman, Colt Whaley and Brandon Siler. New Zealand's two goals were scored by Nicholas Gloug and Dane Dunlop.
However, the by the end of the night the score was not nearly as important as the friendships that were forged between these young men from two countries a world apart. After the game, players from both teams gathered in the McKinney StarCenter Grill for pizza and socializing.
