The city of Lewisville and Autumn Leaves will present the second annual North Texas Baby Boomers and More Expo on Saturday.
“This event is for baby boomers. It will give them the opportunity to learn more about issues that are pertinent to them,” said Jeff White, recreation specialist. “This will help them with any subject they may have interest in, but don’t know who to contact. It’s an easy access point for them. Business vendors will be on hand to give them a good starting point.”
The National Recreation and Parks Association Leisure in Aging Section recently
gave the 2008 Innovation in Aging Award to the city of Lewisville for the 2008 North Texas Baby Boomers and More Expo at its annual conference in Salt Lake City.
“Being given this award so close to this year’s event has helped us promote the 2009 expo,” White said.
Baby boomers attending the expo will have the opportunity to speak with vendors ranging from affordable housing to anti-aging products and services to assisted living and skilled care facilities to home care assistance and insurance. White said there will also be vendors for medical equipment and gardening along with part time job opportunities and volunteering.
“This is our attempt to reach younger seniors, those possibly still working and looking to retire,” said Teresa Milam, senior center manager. “During the expo we will also have drawings, presentations and live entertainment.”
Beginning at 10 a.m., Keep Lewisville Beautiful will give a going green presentation; there will also be long term care, stress management and emergency prepardeness demonstrations. Attendees will also see a demonstration of pickleball, which is a cross between tennis and ping pong. The game is played with whiffle ball and paddle.
“We have over 50 members in our pickleball team,” White said. “It is a very senior friendly sport.”
Music during the expo will be provided by Marty Prue, a local baby boomer. There will also be drawings for $200 Best Buy, Lowes and Home Depot gift cards. Attendees may register for the drawings on the day of the event, but they must be present to win. Drawings will be at 1 p.m.
Approximately 500 people attended last year, and this year the senior center is expecting higher numbers. The term “Baby Boomer” is used to describe a person born between 1946 and 1964. Baby Boomers make up 20 percent of the U.S. population, which translates to 80 million people. In Southern Denton County there are an estimated 30,000 residents in the Baby Boomer demographic.
