Inmate found dead in infirmary cell

By Danny Gallagher, McKinney Courier-Gazette
Collin County Sheriff's Office officials confirmed the death of an inmate found in an infirmary cell.
Deputies discovered Christopher Garrett Schell, 29, of Frisco in his cell Monday evening trying to commit suicide. Doctors pronounced him dead after paramedics transported him to the hospital.
Lt. John Norton of the Collin County Sheriff's Department said in a released statement deputies found Schell in an infirmary cell at approximately 6:55 p.m. Monday at the Collin County Detention Center on Community Avenue. Deputies discovered a bed linen was wrapped around Schell's neck.
Paramedics transported Schell to Medical Center of McKinney. He died the following Tuesday, Norton said.
Schell had been placed in an infirmary cell for unknown reasons, but deputies did not place him on a suicide watch. Some of the detention center's officers discovered Schell trying to commit suicide while they were "doing routine medical checks," Norton said.
Schell had been in the detention center since Saturday. Plano Police arrested and booked him on a first and second degree-charge of manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance. He was being held on a $100,000 bond, according to jail records.
Schell has a total of 14 charges on his court record dating back to March of 1999 including misdemeanors for assault, theft, failure to identify a fugitive, evading arrest and felonies for assaulting a public servant, theft and fraudulent use of identifying information. The drug charges Plano Police charged him with on Saturday were the first drug related charges on his record, according to Collin County Court records.
