Softball: Marcus tops Lewisville in 6-5A opener

Published: Friday, March 27, 2009 11:47 PM CDT
Marcus’ softball team used a five-run second inning to cruise past Lewisville in both teams District 6-5A openers Thursday, 10-1, in Lewisville.

Krysta O’Neal started in the circle for the Farmers (7-14, 0-1 in 6-5A) and struck out two batters in the first inning before running into trouble in the second. O’Neal would finish the game, allowing seven hits.

Heather Foust earned the win for Marcus (11-5-2, 1-0 in 6-5A) surrendering four hits.

“(O’Neal) pitched pretty well,” said Lewisville coach Lori Alexander. “But, we weren’t getting the corners called and when you are having trouble locating, and pitching to the center of the plate, you are going to get hit against this competition.”

Alexander also said the team caught a bad break in the second after Marcus’ leadoff runner reached.

“They bunted the ball and it looked like it touched the batter in the box for a dead ball,” Alexander said. “But, it was ruled fair. They ended up with runners on first and third. We could have been out of the inning with just a run or two, but it ended up being five.”

The Farmers run came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lewisville’s Maleia Newland reached on a walk, one of two in the game, stole second base and was later advanced to third. She came in to score on a RBI-single on a slap hit by Haley Howerton.

“We have to start hitting earlier,” Alexander said. “We aren’t getting the bats going until too late in the game, and when we have runners on base we have to do a better job of driving them in.”

Lewisville will look to get its first district win at noon today at Flower Mound (9-0, 1-0 in 6-5A).
