Softball: Farmers hope experience carries team

Published: Friday, February 20, 2009 4:44 PM CST
Lewisville’s softball team hopes added experience and versatility will make the difference this year as the Farmers look to improve on a fifth-place finish in District 6-5A last season.

Lewisville is in a competitive district, which features six teams, as opposed to eight last season.

The Farmers team consists mainly of juniors and seniors, with sophomores Amber Smith and Hannah Barnett, and freshman Haley Howerton, as the only underclassmen.

“I think it’s good that we are a more experienced team,” said Lewisville coach Lori Alexander. “But, we also have some good, young players. A key for us is going to be our focus and our leadership.”

Lewisville returns eight players who were named to the 6-5A all-district team last season, including senior Ashley Reyes, last year’s Co-Utility Player of the Year.

Last season, Reyes split time between the outfield and shortstop.

First-team selections returning include Ashleigh Rye (outfield/first base) and Cynthia Barrera (third base).

Also returning are first baseman Maleia Newland, a second-team selection last season, as well as honorable mention selections Devon Duran (outfield), Amanda Scott (utility), Krysta O’Neal (pitcher) and Barnett (second base).

“I think our forte is playing solid defense,” Alexander said. “We don’t have an overpowering pitcher, so teams are going to put the ball in play and we have to play good defense.”

Alexander said that while O’Neal had a solid season last year, this season the Farmers are working more on her accuracy.

“We’re trying to get her to hit her spots and get the ball where we want it,” she said. “She has matured a lot since last season, but I think we are going to take the bat out of her hands more. Sometimes, if she wasn’t doing well at the plate it would affect her pitching.”

Offensively, Alexander said the Farmers have some punch, but will have to find a way to manufacture runs.

“We have some power hitters,” Alexander said. “Scott, Rye and Duran have power, but in general we are a smaller team. We are going to have to get runs and convert when we can take them.”

The Farmers season is already underway, and the team has gone 2-1 midway through the Mansfield Tournament.

Lewisville earned wins against Richland, 4-0, and Arlington Lamar, 5-2, but also lost against Keller, 10-2.
