Lewisville looks to spoil Carroll’s playoff chances

Published: Wednesday, November 5, 2008 1:01 AM CST
Despite Lewisville’s football team being eliminated from playoff contention, a young Farmers football team is looking for something to build on toward next season.

The Farmers won’t need much added incentive, as they close the season out against state power Southlake Carroll, playing in its first season in District 6-5A.

The Farmers (2-7, 0-4) also have a chance to keep the Dragons (6-2, 2-2) out of the playoffs. Carroll clinches a postseason berth with a win. If Lewisville wins, the Dragons could fall into a three-way tie for third place, depending of the results of the game between Coppell (2-2) and Flower Mound (1-3).

“The Farmers are very excited about the opportunity to play Southlake Carroll,” said Lewisville coach Steve Gaddis. “A win could really make our season. You know, we’ve played teams tough in three of our four district games, so we are definitely going there with the chance to knock them off.”

Carroll enters the game coming off their second loss of the season, 44-28, at the hands of Hebron. They had previously won consecutive games after dropping their district opener in overtime to Coppell, 57-53.

“They’re a complete team,” Gaddis said. “But, they’re one play away from being 1-3. I think that just shows how strong the district is. They’ve given up some points, but we are going to have to play mistake free and eliminate penalties if we want to knock them off.”

Carroll, like Lewisville, will be playing without the services of their opening-day starting quarterback. Kyle Padron is out with a broken hand he injured Oct. 17 at Marcus.

Replacing Padron has been David Piland, who is 1-1 as a starter.

“They had the change but they are still really good,” Gaddis said. “Our defense has been holding people down and playing well lately, but we have to keep it up. It should be a heck of a football game to finish the season. We talked to our kids about overcoming adversity and never quitting. And, they haven’t. There’s a lot of Farmer pride.”
