Plano: JPII students donates to help Ike recovery

Published: Saturday, October 11, 2008 8:15 PM CDT
Students from the National Honor Society at John Paul II High School will present a check to the American Red Cross on Oct. 24 to benefit the victims of Hurricane Ike.

“As National Honor Society sponsor, I was heartened to see the generous response of the students and staff of John Paul II High School’s effort to raise money to help Hurricane Ike victims,” said Caryl Gatzlaff, NHS sponsor and English department chair. “Their desire to assist in the recovery effort was excellent.”

The NHS organized a drive to raise $1,243 for the American Red Cross and educated their peers on the impact that their contributions can have. John Paul students and faculty members contributed to the donation.

“It was really exciting seeing the school getting involved,” said John Darwin, NHS President. “We had such short notice for the Hurricane Ike drive that it was great that the whole school stepped up and donated.”

The American Red Cross operates more than 260 shelters across Texas to provide shelter, meals and emotional support to evacuees throughout the Hurricane Ike relief operation. The American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people.

“The American Red Cross thanks John Paul II High School for their generous donation in helping us provide aid to the victims of these natural disasters,” said Andria Butler, The American Red Cross’ Dallas Chapter representative. “Your gift has made a positive impact in eliminating suffering and loss to many individuals and families.”

John Paul, a co-educational preparatory Catholic school, serves grades 9-12 and is currently in its third year of operation.

“Seeing different photos and images of the horrific damage the residents of Houston, Galveston and surrounding areas had suffered, the officers of NHS in cooperation with our school administration put together thoughts and ideas to produce a fundraiser for the victims of Hurricane Ike,” said Alyna Nathoo, an NHS student. “The National Honor Society believed that this was a great way to give back to the community and live out our school’s motto.”
