Critterwoman, critters entertain crowds at library

Published: Friday, July 11, 2008 3:24 PM CDT
Some children might not feel too comfortable with a 40-pound, nine-foot-long Python wrapped around their necks.

But Audrey Johnson, 10, of Flower Mound, and Jacob Moran, 9, of Highland Village, bravely stood still as Critterwoman (Dena Faulkner of Colleyville) wrapped the sleepy, slimy snake around them before a crowd of more than 150 people Thursday night at the Lewisville Library.

Critterwoman wowed the crowd with several interesting creatures in shows both Thursday night and Friday morning at the library.

The Thursday night program began with her holding a large tarantula in her hand. She also showed the crowd a small American alligator, a giant hissing cockroach, a scorpion and numerous other critters from different parts of the world.

A favorite of the crowd seemed to be the legless lizard. Critterwoman explained that the legless lizard, which is harmless, is often used in movies in the place of snakes. In the movie, “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” she said, Harrison Ford is supposed to be in a pit with snakes, but is actually in a pit full of legless lizards.

Critterwoman also noted that lizards, unlike snakes, can close their eyes. As she petted the lizard on top of its head, it closed its eyes.

On several occasions, children in the audience were invited to come forward and pet the different creatures being shown by Critterwoman.

The children were provided mats and sat on the floor in the front of the auditorium, while parents were seated in chairs toward the back.

Faulkner, who was in the role of Critterwoman for the Thursday night and Friday morning shows at the Lewisville Library, is one of several employees of Critterman Safari Guides. The organization offers programs for birthdays, library presentations and other events. For information, go to www.critterman.com.
