The Plano Fire Rescue Associates selected four high school graduates to receive a total of $4,000 in scholarships.

The students were honored at the fifth annual award banquet at Fire Station 2 last night.

“The recipients represent a cross-section of what we think students should portray,” said Marcia Hurst, PFRA scholarship committee chair. “They are very active in their communities and very active in their school work, church and extracurricular activities.”

The committee members chose the finalists based on their grade point averages, course work they have completed, college entrance test scores, employment history, and community service involvement.

The recipients are all children of a fire department employee and have graduated high school.

Firefighter Allan Rasor is the father of two recipients, Randy and Sabrina.

“I’m very proud of both of them,” Rasor said. “This really helps us cover college expenses.”

Both Randy and Sabrina are attending Southern Methodist University. Rasor said Sabrina was just accepted to SMU’s business school and his son is in marketing and business.

“The PFRA does a lot of stuff to support the fire department,” Rasor said. “This is just one more thing and we really appreciate them.”

The 2008 finalists list also includes Kaile York and Taylor Amadon.

York is the daughter of firefighter paramedic Wayne York. She will be attending Baylor University.

Amadon is the son of Capt. Jeff Amadon. He will be attending the University of Arkansas.

PFRA was founded in 1995 to raise funds to support the Plano Fire Department Annual Awards banquet.

The organization is comprised of citizens of Plano who are interested in supporting activities of the fire department.

To date, PFRA has awarded 23 scholarships totaling $13,500.

Hurst said this year is the first time the organization has awarded $1,000 to each student. She said previously PFRA awarded $500 to each student.

“We do various fundraisers throughout the year and receive a lot of community support,” Hurst said.
