Local couple releases children’s book
By Dana Yu, Staff Writer
“My Secret Life as Peanut,” a children’s book authored by Plano husband and wife Todd Friedman and Megan Andrews, is being released nationwide today.
The book is based on a true story that began when Friedman and Andrews’ next-door neighbors’ cat, Sassy, first climbed over the fence and into Friedman and Andrews’ backyard. Their time spent with Sassy sparked memories of a friend’s cat named Peanut. Friedman and Andrews decided to name the calico cat Peanut during these day-time visits.
“My Secret Life as Peanut” is a children’s book also written to appeal to adults and animal lovers.
“My Secret Life as Peanut” is published by Wild Icon Publishing Group, a publishing company located in Plano.
Because Sassy was an adopted adult cat, the book’s authors decided to partner with Operation Kindness, the largest no-kill animal shelter in north Texas, and donate a portion of the book’s profits. One hundred percent of profits from purchases made online today will be donated to Operation Kindness. A portion of the book’s profits will continue to be distributed to various organizations after June 4.
“We’re very excited about it,” said Melody Boulay, communications director of Operation Kindness, about the organization’s partnership with the book. “It promotes animal relationships, and the proceeds are going toward promoting our mission, which is saving as many animals as possible.”
Friedman and Andrews began crafting the story in April 2007 after encountering disbelief from Friedman’s co-workers about their part-time pet.
Sassy’s double life and the book remained unknown to the cat’s real owners, identified as “The Jones” in the book.
On May 17, Friedman and Andrews invited their neighbors and Sassy over to their home and presented them with the first copy of “My Secret Life as Peanut.”
Friedman and Andrews will hold a book signing and fundraising event June 14 at IKEA in Frisco with a special guest appearance by Sassy, aka Peanut, from 1 to 1:30 p.m.
“My Secret Life as Peanut” can be found at curiouscalico.com and purchased on Amazon.com.
