Donations coming in for bronze alphabet chair for library
BY DAN EAKIN, Staff Writer
A unique chairs anywhere is now on display and will soon be a permanent part of the furniture at the Lewisville Library, if enough funds are donated.
Friends of the Lewisville Public Library want to purchase, with the help of donations from the public, The Alphabet Chair, a bronze sculpture made up of all 26 letters of the alphabet.
The PointBank donated $1,600 Wednesday for the letter “P,” the fifth letter that has been sponsored so far.
Families, companies, organizations and individuals are all invited to contribute funds for the purchase of the chair. Checks should be made out to Friends of the Lewisville Public Library, and all donations are tax deductible.
“The Alphabet Chair will be a wonderful addition to our new library expansion, which formally opened last February,” said Beatty. “Each letter in the Alphabet Chair has its own individual texture imprinted from nature or objects. For example, A is for animals, B is for buttons and C is for coral, etc.
“The Alphabet Chair is a celebration of language, art and community,” she continued. “Children of all ages will enjoy sitting in the chair and solving the mystery of each letter’s origins.”
PointBank raised the funds during annual golf tournament the company hosts to raise money for the towns it has branches, said Robert Fogle, area president of PointBank.
“People at the Lewisville Library suggested that we gave the money to Friends of the Lewisville Public Library,” Fogle said. “We decided to give it toward the Alphabet Chair and to sponsor the letter P.”
Beatty noted that, for example, the Smith family could sponsor the letter S, or a Girl Scout troop may want to sponsor the letter G, etc.
The Alphabet Chair is one of only about 16 of its kind in the nation, and was sculpted in Massachusetts by Sarah Peters in Massachusetts for Sculptureworks, Inc.
Donations of $100 or more will be publicly recognized. Those who sponsor an entire letter for $1,500 will be recognized on a bronze plaque to be permanently displayed at the library.
