The grand opening of the Lewisville Library expansion project will be one for the books.

Library and city personnel will celebrate the grand opening in a big way, beginning at 1 p.m. Feb. 17.

Speakers will include Peggy Rudd, director and librarian of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, and Jody Dean, CBS 11 News anchor and host of the 98.7 FM KLUV Morning Show.

LAFS, the Lewisville Fire Department’s Life and Safety Clowns, will be clowning around at 1:20-4 p.m. Also during that time, face painting, balloon animals and a children’s scavenger hunt will be featured.

A children’s program, Critterman, is scheduled for 2 p.m. Fiddle Rascals, a violin musical program, will be at 3 p.m. Also at 3 p.m., teenagers will be invited to participate in karaoke.

Masai Maggie’s Puppets, Magic and Stories is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Visitors will be invited to tour the library throughout the afternoon, according to Ann Wiegand, library manager.

The 77,800 square-foot expansion project was funded by a 4B sales tax approved by voters in 2002. Phase 1 included construction of two floors north of the existing library at Main Street and Civic Circle, and Phase 2 included renovation of the existing library.

The expansion project results in the library offering more services, including 60 public access computers, wireless Internet access, a drive-up book return and service window, seven group study rooms, two conference rooms, a community room and self checkout and automated return.

The library, which now has 161,000 items, has a 230,000-item capacity, including books, music, DVDs, videos, audio books, computer CDs, Spanish language materials, magazines and newspapers.

A total of 27,000 e-books are available on-line, including classics and research titles.

A total of more than 400 programs and story times per year are planned at the library.

The library also offers TexShare Databases Online from the Texas state library, which provides newspapers, magazines, professional journals, medical resources, research on public and private companies and genealogical tools with on-site and remote access available.
