Murder victim may have been easy target
By DANNY GALLAGHER, KRYSTAL DE LOS SANTOS, McKinney Courier-Gazette
(July 11, 2006) While McKinney residents agree that the slaying of a Craig Ranch real estate sales agent was a tragedy, others also say that the woman was an easy target, alone in a new, mostly uninhabited neighborhood.
Sarah Anne Walker, 40, of Frisco, was found dead Saturday in the kitchen of a model home in the Hemingway town homes at Craig Ranch in the 5700 block of Conch Train Road. She was stabbed at least 27 times, according to a preliminary report by the Collin County Medical Examiner.
"There was no reason for this woman to be in a sales office totally exposed," said neighborhood developer David Craig. "Unfortunately, that's standard practice in the industry, and that's got to change."
"I don't think that it's specifically women, but for anybody in the real estate business, whether it's an open house or sales office," Craig said. "There ought to be a minimum two people there as a precaution."
While some real estate companies have started to practice the "buddy system," Craig said, "not everybody chooses to buddy up, and it's tragic for the City of McKinney; It's tragic for Craig Ranch, and it's tragic for her family."
Craig said he knew Walker personally, and that "she was bubbly. Very professional; a good person."
"She didn't deserve this," he said.
McKinney resident Ken Sandoval said that the murder surprised him, but that "the opportunity presented itself," and Walker was in the right place at the right time.
"We understand how exposed someone in that position could be," he said. "The fact is that area is not well traveled yet. It's not that developed yet, and it lends itself to a crime like that."
Sandoval added that he hopes other agents take heed of the dangers of their duties, and realize that "we're not immune just because we're McKinney."
Another resident, Steve Leonard, agreed.
"This one looked to be personal, but these crimes really can happen anywhere," he said.
City Councilman Pete Huff, who represents the district in which Craig Ranch is located, said he would like the community to be patient while police conduct their investigation.
"That's the best prescription," he said. "I know we all want answers right now, and I do, too, but sometimes that's not possible."
So far, police do not have a suspect or a motive for the murder, but police spokesman Randy Roland said they are gathering clues at the scene and interviewing witnesses and acquaintances of Walker to try and determine the nature of the attack and what exactly happened in the model home at noon Saturday.
"You don't expect that in that kind of area. You don't expect that in any area of McKinney really," Huff said. "We all feel safe and comfortable there. It's a nice area."
Huff said he has "faith" in the McKinney Police Department.
Developer Craig said he, too, expects justice.
"I'm hopeful law enforcement finds this sick person and is able to do it expeditiously," he said.
